Introducing Goolwa Pipi Co – Jobs, Regional Development and Export Growth

The Honourable Leon Bignell MP formally launched the new Goolwa Pipi Co on the 30th September at Port Elliot.  The GPCo is a wholly South Australian owned and operated Pipi harvesting, processing and marketing company that has grown out of the foundation of Coorong Cockles and the Pipi Harvesters Association. The upgraded facilities at Port Elliot are AQIS approved and features a new Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) processing plant.

Support in the development of the new entity has been provided by Fisheries Research & Development Corporation (FRDC), FoodSA, Alexandrina Council and the RDA. SARDI has also assisted in developing new MAP process that extends the shelf life of the Pipi from four days to 10 greatly increasing the marketing opportunities of the product. The Pipi fishery (part of the Lakes and Coorong Fishery) is also Certified Sustainable Seafood (MSC) accredited highly valued in the Asian market.

Tom Robinson, the Managing Director, the Chair Roger Edwards and other Board members have all worked hard to make this initiative a reality. Tom cited one of the greatest hurdles as developing the trust between the fishermen to pull the cooperative together. All members have signed on for the next five years to grow the organisation with a further $500,000 needed for this future development that will provide a fantastic opportunity for our region.
